READING & UNDERSTANDING The Rabbits

1. In groups (or as a class) read The Rabbits

2. Discuss what the meaning of the book is

- What is the message

The message of the rabbits is that the ‘white people’ have taken over.

3. Make a list of some visual techniques that you think help create these meanings.

Eg: Colour, participants, setting

They made the ‘white people’ look like selfish pigs, taking everything. And how they changed there lives for the worse.

4. Discuss what you think colours represent in this book.

Dull and lifeless colours symbolising defeat and loss of land and the ‘white people’ looking like rabbits because they came in many.

-Analyse representational meaning

The reading path of this image draws our eyes to the big rabbit because he takes up a majority of the page and stands out more. We then follow the big and strong vector of the rabbits body and ears vertically then horizontally across the page to the possoms (Aboriginals). This symbolises that the rabbit is more of a higher status than the Aboriginals because he looks richer and more civilized. The rabbits having a compas and a map symbolises more technical and a smarter generation. The Aboriginals being, nothing. The colours symbolise the status. The Aboriginals are a light brown, the same colour of the land which symbolises them being 1. Where as the ‘white people’ are white and this stands out from the brown backrounds and that they dont belong here.

-Analyse interactive meaning

A feeling that the rabbits (’white people’) are developing the lands.

PROJECT_BRIEFCASE_23

-Analyse compositional meaning

The Aboriginals arent meant to be noticed that much. There at the back behind the rabbits.

Our Black Princess Lost

February 21, 2008

She turned fourteen only today
And
Impressive as she is
On a Whiteman’s catwalk
We have lost our child
Our only child
Somewhere she walks with them fella’s
Them real big fella’s
In New York
Somewhere we have lost a child to the new world
To
Money and power
To drugs
To stardom for fifteen minutes
Whilst her culture dies

This is a very sad poem because its talking about how he aboriginal culture was destroyed and how the aboriginal peoples relationship to each other and the land was torn apart. It is talking about the ordeals they went through and the hurdels they had to face.

Even the heading is upsetting because its talking about them losing just about everything.
